EPDM roofing FAQ's

What is EPDM?

EPDM is a synthetic rubber with various applications, including flat roofs, vehicle seals, playground coatings, and more. It can be crosslinked through Sulfur vulcanisation, making it more durable. EPDM is classified as an M-Class rubber, known for its saturated polyethylene chain. Its predecessor, EPR, could only be crosslinked using radical techniques. EPDM, thanks to added diene units, made the rubber manufacturing process easier. Compared to unsaturated rubbers like SBR or natural rubber, EPDM and other saturated polymers are more resistant to ozone, light, and heat. EPDM can withstand temperatures up to 150°C.

How long does EPDM last?

EPDM rubber roofs are incredibly durable, with a lifespan of 50 years or more. Continuous advancements in EPDM membrane manufacturing ensure its longevity. This material is highly resistant to UV damage, preventing shrinkage, rot, or damage from precipitation. Additionally, rubber roofs are shear resistant and can withstand strong winds.

Can you walk on EPDM rubber roof membranes?

EPDM roofing membranes are only designed to withstand light & occasional foot traffic, that would occur during installation or occasional cleaning and maintenance. It's not therefore recommended for balconies and terraces.

Can EPDM be installed over an existing flat roof?

To install EPDM membrane over an existing flat roof, a barrier layer of 16mm plywood, 16mm OSB board, or polyisocyanurate board with a fibreglass backing must be first laid over and fixed to the existing roof.

What materials can EPDM be laid onto?

OSB and plywood are among the most appropriate materials for installing EPDM. Other compatible surfaces include lightweight concrete, fibreglass, and other non-porous materials. However, it is not recommended to apply EPDM over bitumen or asphalt, as this may lead to problems in the future as a result of movement and expansion.

Is EPDM slippery when wet?

Yes, EPDM becomes slippery when wet or in frosty, icy weather so care should be taken if you need to walk on it for maintenance or cleaning. (NB: EPDM is not suitable for situations where regular foot traffic is envisaged)
